What Happens When You Cross a BMX and Fat Bike, Then Add Electricity

Enki Cycles' new Billy e-bike can really shred

It’s been scientifically proven that you never forget how to ride a bike.

But as you grow older, it’s highly possible to forget why you started riding in the first place: fun. The Billy, a new two-wheel steed from San Francisco-based Enki Cycles, is designed to help you remember.

A BMX-style electric bike that uses the same carbon belt drive that some Harley Davidsons and Buell motorcycles utilize, the Billy is powered by 500-watt Fat Bike Motor that’s aided by a lithium-ion battery, a combo that gives the bike a 41-mile range and top speed of 20 MPH.

Other fun-loving features on the go-anywhere ride include ultra-wide BMX handlebars, a hyper-responsive twist throttle, mechanical disc brakes, a 5-volt USB charging port and a convenient folding frame. All told, the complete package tips the scales at 54 pounds, including the battery.

“The brief for Billy was simple: make it fun,” the brand says. “We remembered what it was that drew us into this two-wheeled world in the first place — that first experience with a bike — the JOY. And that’s where we started. We took the simplicity and pure joy of the BMX riding platform and then added the magic with that little bit of electric awesome.”

Currently available on Kickstarter, the yet-to-be-funded Billy is going for $1,290, though the retail price will be $2,490.
