When Rimowa first emerged on the luggage scene in the early 20th century they dealt exclusively in aluminum. It would eventually pave way for the iconic, grooved-design case — synonymous with luxury travel — on which Rimowa has ultimately built their brand.

It wasn’t until the early aughts that Rimowa began producing polycarbonate cases. Generally lighter in weight and more durable than other plastics, polycarbonate has allowed the brand to expand their offering without cutting any corners where quality is involved.

One of my favorite aspects of Rimowa’s polycarbonate offering, though, is that every season a new collection is launched to feature a new color pallet inspired by a different far-flung destination each time. The result is usually two distinctive, often candy-colored cases, each of which are available in cabin, check-in and trunk sizes, but only for a limited time. In July 2020, for example, the brand channeled the Mojave desert to produce cases in “Desert Rose” and “Cactus.” Last year, they debuted “Mango Orange” and “Bamboo Green” — an ode to Thailand’s famed floating markets.

But this year, Rimowa revealed today, the “bold landscapes” of Tanzania are their latest source of inspiration. The two new colors, Azure and Flamingo, are available on a range of suitcases, bags and accessories, and lend themselves to a collection of spectacular-looking travel products.

Of course, a Rimowa case — polycarbonate or otherwise — is an investment. While the cabin-sized case starts at $720, the check-in goes for $900 and the trunk a whopping $1,120. In other words: If you, like me, enjoy a matching set, it’s going to cost you. That said, the nature of these collections is that they’re bold and made in limited quantities, so the likelihood of your Flamingo-colored Rimowa case getting confused with someone else’s at baggage claim is virtually nonexistent — an important benchmark when it comes to selecting new luggage.

And if you’re not ready to commit to something quite so bold? You could always take the Never Still Backpack or Tote — both of which were just introduced in the new colors — for a spin first. But be warned: You’ll likely be back for more. It’s a known side effect of having dabbled in Rimowa luggage … trust me.
