Soccer star Mesut Ozil is giving 1,000 children a wedding gift.

To celebrate tying the knot with his fiancée Amine Gulse, the Arsenal playmaker will be paying for life-changing surgery for 1,000 children through the charity BigShoe.

Ozil is also asking guests to donate to the charity instead of giving the couple traditional wedding gifts.

“As a professional footballer, I am in a fortunate and privileged position. However, I invite everyone who is willing and able to help to support a very special project close to both of our hearts that we will undertake with BigShoe,” Ozil wrote on Instagram. “Amine and I will bear the expenses for surgeries of 1000 children in need. I’d be happy if in addition, many more treatments all over the world can be fulfilled. BigShoe works alongside German and Swiss Doctors to help children all around the world by providing life-changing surgeries. Burns, club feet & clefts are medical conditions that developing countries struggle to treat due to lack of doctors, money and medicine.”

After winning the World Cup with Germany in 2014, Ozil donated his entire victory bonus to help pay for 23 Brazilian children to receive surgery through BigShoe.

BigShoe is an organization funded by sports fans and athletes that helps poor children with medical operations as well as supports youth education via participation in sports programs.
