Flowers for Mother’s Day this year?
Let’s get some questions out of the way.
Are florists an essential business? Depends on the state. As the trade industry group the Society of American Florists notes, “On the federal side we’ve seen no announcement that would prohibit floral or similar product deliveries yet, and there have been no restrictions put on FedEx, UPS or USPS. These are state-by-state and municipality-driven, however, so be sure to keep an eye out for announcements at that level.”
Should you be ordering flowers? Arguable either way, but all agree mental health is important. As UrbanStems CEO Seth Goldman told New York magazine’s Intelligencer site, “People are still buying flowers. It’s an opportunity to connect,” adding that while the company isn’t providing something essential like food and water, flowers are “essential for people’s psyches during these difficult times.”

Like other industries, local florists are shuttered, suffering or having to utilize different supply chains than usual. So while you might want to help out a local business, you may need to turn to a national chain to deliver your bouquet (which is probably working with a local florist anyway), if you feel comfortable with that.
And again, mental connection is important, and telling mom you’re thinking about her is certainly going to perk up her spirits and therefore her health.

1-800-Flowers: The “official florist of Mother’s Day” (yeah, we don’t know either) offers same- and next-day delivery and utilizes local florists. They’re currently offering bouquets starting for as little as $35, with $10 off this particular selection of roses.
The Bouqs Co: The beatiful bouquets from this farm-direct, eco-friendly site start at $49, but flower subscriptions are 30% off (it’s like telling mom you love her every month!). There’s also a “one-click” option for roses if you just want to do this quickly — and a 30% off discount on anything if you refer a friend who buys something (for both you and them).
ProFlowers: Not a lot of sales (and most are just $5 off), but there are plenty of options in the $40-$50 range…plus some interesting pivots, such as potted gardenias and bonsai trees.
Farmgirl Flowers: Some of the Mother’s Day options here are already sold out, and we can see why — they’re uniquely packaged and undeniably colorful. You can still find a burlap-wrapped bouquet for just $59, however. And through today (April 30), it’s 20% off sitewide with the code “OMGPEONIES”
Teleflora: The “Deal of the Day” takes all the guesswork out of choosing; you pick your price ($50+) and “expert florists exercise their creativity to design a beautiful bouquet using the freshest seasonal flowers available.” There’s also 20% off for new customers.
UrbanStems: Another site that offers an array of subscription options (including seasonal) that’ll save you a bit of money. Otherwise, bouquets here are quite nice but certainly elevated, running from about $80-$175.
