Since 1995, the golf competition currently known as the PNC Championship has brought together a host of father/son teams. This year’s edition of the competition was of particular interest due to the presence of Tiger Woods, playing alongside his son Charlie. Given Woods’s statements about his future in golf, his decision to compete alongside his son came as something of a welcome surprise.
When the event ended on Sunday afternoon, the Woods team finished second overall to a team featuring John Daly and his son, John Daly II. As ESPN reports, the Dalys set a new record for the tournament at 27 under. The elder Woods’s quality of play drew plenty of acclaim. ESPN’s Bob Harig wrote that Woods “played remarkably well.”
Woods’s own comments on the event emphasized that simply competing was a major achievement for him. “The fact that I’m able to have this opportunity this year, even a couple weeks ago we didn’t really know whether or not I would be doing this, but here we are,” he told ESPN.
ESPN’s report also notes that Woods was still showing the effects of the injuries he incurred in a car accident earlier this year — mostly in situations where he had to walk.
Woods also dismissed talk that his level of play was ready for the PGA Tour. “I can’t compete against these guys right now, no,” he said. “It’s going to take a lot of work to get to where I can feel I can compete with these guys and be at a high level.” Still, his showing at this tournament seems like an encouraging sign.
