Trailing 1-0 in their best-of-three wild-card series, the San Diego Padres powered their way to a comeback victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday night.

With San Diego trailing by four runs in the sixth inning, Fernando Tatis Jr. stepped to the plate and smashed a three-run home run to bring the Padres within a run. Manny Machado followed with a solo shot to tie the game at 6.

The following inning while leading by a run, Tatis came to the plate again and blasted his second home run of the night, this one a two-run shot that was followed by a mammoth bat flip and overstated home run trot.

“We’re in the playoffs. The game was not done, the job was not done until we get those 27 outs, we cannot back down, we cannot settle,” Tatis said of his second homer. “There was a lot of game left. I was wanting to keep motivating my teammates, just to let them know, to keep on. They are a team that they’re going to answer back, so we’ve got to keep doing the work.”

Tatis was not the only Padre with two home runs on the evening as Will Myers also went deep twice in San Diego’s 11-9 victory over the Cardinals.

In addition to being fun to watch, the blasts by Tatis and Myers were also historic.

It was the 23rd comeback win of 2020 for the Padres, who are the first team in postseason history with five home runs from the sixth inning onward in a game.

Game 3 of the series is tonight. The winner will advance to take on either the Dodgers or Braves.
