As the weather warms up, switching to a lightweight moisturizer is a smart move, but even better if it comes packed with SPF for added protection during moments of sun exposure (like briefly walking outside, taking a Zoom call on the patio, or, heck, while I’m writing this).

That kind of daily incidental exposure adds up over time and can contribute to skin damage, dark spots, and early signs of aging. An SPF moisturizer delivers a one-two punch of hydration and built-in UV defense, making it one of the easiest warm-weather grooming upgrades you can make. And while these formulas are not a full replacement for dedicated sunscreen, they are excellent for moisturizing and helping protect skin during lower-key summer days.

As Dr. Nicole Ruth, DO, FAAD, explains, “A moisturizer with SPF can provide meaningful sun protection, but most people do not apply enough product to reach the SPF listed on the bottle. Dedicated sunscreens are typically formulated for more even coverage, water resistance, and higher UV protection, while SPF moisturizers work best for lower-exposure, everyday situations.”

Grooming Products Worth the Splurge
From an $80 face wash to olive oil-infused hand soap, these are the premium essentials to add to your routine

Modern SPF moisturizers do far more than simply tack sun protection onto a face cream. As Dr. Ruth notes, “Many current SPF moisturizers hydrate very well and can perform similarly to traditional moisturizers, especially newer formulas designed with barrier support in mind.” Many are now packed with ingredients like ceramides, glycerin, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid, helping skin stay smoother, softer, and healthier while defending against everyday UV exposure.

In other words, they are ideal for coffee runs, commutes, quick errands, or light afternoon walks where you still want hydration and some built-in protection. Below, nine hydrating, protective formulas to add to your warm-weather grooming arsenal, plus expert insight from Dr. Ruth on getting the most out of these multitasking formulas.

Best All-Around Moisturizer With SPF: Oars+Alps Everyday Anti-Aging Face Moisturizer SPF 37

Few brands blend activity-focused sun protection with hydration quite like Oars+Alps, and when I think of SPF moisturizers, my mind immediately goes to this blue-and-yellow tube. Lightweight formula? Check. SPF 37 protection? Check. Oil-free finish? Also check. This multitasking formula is packed with hydrating, antioxidant-rich ingredients like hyaluronic acid for moisture, Alpine Caribou Moss for defense, vitamin E for conditioning, and vitamin B5 for soothing support, helping skin stay smooth and protected during shorter activities. It also comes in a travel-ready tube, made to be tossed into your weekend bag before every sunny summer happening.

Key Ingredients: SPF 37 protects against UVA/UVB rays; hyaluronic acid hydrates and retains moisture; Alpine Caribou Moss helps defend against environmental stress; vitamin E supports and protects the skin barrier; vitamin B5 soothes and conditions.

Best Moisturizer With SPF for Sensitive Skin: CeraVe AM Facial Moisturizing Lotion with SPF 30

Almost all CeraVe products are fragrance-free, which is a big reason the brand has become such a dermatologist favorite for sensitive skin. And importantly, CeraVe understands that gentle does not have to mean basic. This lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer hydrates, nourishes, and delivers SPF protection, using not two but three essential ceramides to reinforce the skin barrier, hyaluronic acid for hydration, and niacinamide to help calm and soothe irritation. The texture is lightweight and easy to wear every morning, sans any greasiness. If your skin leans sensitive or irritation prone and you want dependable daily hydration with built-in SPF protection, this is one of the easiest recommendations, hands down.

Key Ingredients: SPF 30 provides broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection; three essential ceramides reinforce the skin barrier; hyaluronic acid hydrates and retains moisture; niacinamide helps calm and soothe skin.

Best Moisturizer With SPF for  for Oily Skin/Acne: Murad Superactive Mattifying Oil and Pore Control Moisturizer SPF 50

Murad offers a few SPF moisturizer formulas for different skin types, but the brand’s newer Mattifying Oil & Pore Control SPF 50 is the one to reach for if your skin leans oily. Yes, it’s pricier than your average drugstore pick, but it’s worth it. Oil-trapping microspheres absorb excess oil; salicylic acid refines texture and minimizes pores; and avocado-derived ingredients keep skin hydrated. Basically, ya know that feeling when you apply a moisturizer and your skin feels so velvety and mattifyingly smooth?  This is it. For humid days when you want oil control, pore-refining benefits, and solid sun protection in one step, it more than justifies the splurge.

Key Ingredients: SPF 50 provides broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection; salicylic acid helps refine texture and minimize pores; oil-trapping microspheres mattify and absorb excess oil; avocado-derived ingredients help balance and hydrate skin; glycerin retains moisture.

Best Everyday Moisturizer with SPF: La Roche-Posay Double Repair UV SPF 30

Especially when you factor in the price and moisturizing performance, La Roche-Posay’s take on an SPF moisturizer exists in an everyday-wear league of its own. Double Repair has remained in my rotation for years thanks to its straightforward, reliable hydration – only here you also get SPF 30 protection built in, too. The formula pairs Ceramide-3 for barrier support with niacinamide for brightening and glycerin for moisture, alongside the brand’s famous thermal spring water, which gives the lotion a cool, comforting feel. Soothing, hydrating, and enjoyable to apply, this modern classic earns its medicine cabinet real estate for (summer) days.

Key Ingredients: SPF 30 provides broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection; Ceramide-3 reinforces the skin barrier; niacinamide calms and brightens; hyaluronic acid hydrates and retains moisture; thermal spring water soothes and comforts skin.

Best Best Value Moisturizer with SPF: Nivea Men Age Defense Daily Moisturizer with Broad Spectrum SPF 30

My first impression at the Nivea preview, where they unveiled the new Age Defense Daily Face Moisturizer, was that it punches well above its weight as one of the more accessible and surprisingly well-rounded SPF moisturizers out right now. It covers all the core bases with broad-spectrum SPF 30, hydrating hyaluronic acid, and even a gentle pro-retinol (a milder vitamin A derivative) to help smooth fine lines. It’s a stellar everyday option with a smooth texture and a price that’s refreshingly easy to digest.

Key Ingredients: SPF 30 provides broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection; hyaluronic acid hydrates and helps retain moisture; pro-retinol helps smooth the appearance of fine lines; glycerin hydrates; vitamin E helps support and protect the skin barrier.

Best High-Performance Moisturizer with SPF: Dermalogica Biolumin-C Heat Aging Protector SPF 50

Dermalogica’s Biolumin-C Heat Aging Protector feels more like a high-end treatment serum than an SPF moisturizer. This potent, science-driven formula combines a brightening Vitamin C complex with a proprietary ThermaRadiance Complex to defend against heat-related damage, including sun exposure. Vitamin E revives dehydrated skin and minimizes the appearance of fine lines, while safflower Oleosomes soothe and replenish. At SPF 50, it functions as a serum, treatment, and sunscreen in one – moisturizing and protecting while targeting dryness and improving texture. It’s not exactly an everyday formula, but when you want a serious skincare treatment with the bonus of an SPF, it’s worth every cent.

Key Ingredients: SPF 50 provides broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection; ultra-stable vitamin C brightens and helps defend against free-radical damage; ThermaRadiance Complex helps protect against heat aging; squalane hydrates and softens skin; bisabolol and allantoin help soothe and calm.

Best Lightweight Moisturizer with SPF: Paula’s Choice Youth-Extending Daily Hydrating Fluid SPF 50

Less a heavy moisturizer and more of a featherweight serum-lotion hybrid, Paula’s Choice SPF fluid is tailor-made for anyone who wants some sun protection without the thicker feel traditional formulas can bring. Plant-derived antioxidants like green tea, grape seed, and pomegranate help defend against environmental stressors while supporting smoother, healthier-looking skin alongside broad-spectrum SPF 50 protection. The satiny ultra-fluid texture behaves differently from your standard moisturizer, and I found dotting it onto the forehead and cheeks before blending worked best. There’s a reason this has quietly become such a cult favorite, especially among oily and combination skin types. It gives you that barely-there, breathable feel while still delivering impressive SPF coverage.

Key Ingredients: SPF 50 provides broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection; green tea, grape seed, goji, and pomegranate extracts provide antioxidant defense; glycerin hydrates and retains moisture; oat extract helps soothe skin; licorice and kiwi extracts help brighten and smooth.

Best Moisturizer with SPF for Activities: Supergoop! PLAY Everyday Face Lotion SPF 50

Supergoop! makes a dizzying number of excellent SPF formulas, but for active lifestyles, PLAY Face Lotion SPF 50 is tough to top. The texture lands in an impressive middle ground: lightweight enough for everyday wear, yet hydrating enough to stay comfortable through humid commutes, long walks, and outdoor workouts. Glycerin helps pull moisture into the skin, while sunflower, rosemary, and rice bran extracts add soothing antioxidant support. It also absorbs quickly, plays nicely with beards, and doesn’t develop the thick, sweaty sunscreen feel that some high-SPF moisturizers can. With 80 minutes of water- and sweat-resistance, it’s easily one of the hardest-working, longest-lasting SPF moisturizers, period.

Key Ingredients: SPF 50 provides broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection; glycerin hydrates and retains moisture; sunflower, rosemary, and rice bran extracts provide soothing antioxidant support; vitamin B5 helps condition and soften skin.

Best Moisturizer with SPF for Barrier Protection: Jack Black Dual Defense Face Moisturizer SPF 30

Jack Black’s Double-Duty Face Moisturizer pulls off more than its name lets on – quadruple duty, if we’re being honest. Hyaluronic acid locks in moisture, niacinamide calms and evens tone, and broad-spectrum SPF keeps you covered. But, an antioxidant blend of cranberry, rosemary, and green tea does the deeper work, defending against free-radical damage and keeping your skin’s barrier solid over time. Keep this cool cobalt blue bottle on hand whenever your skin needs protection from heat, wind, and stress, or simply a little extra TLC.

Key Ingredients: SPF 30 provides broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection; hyaluronic acid hydrates and retains moisture; niacinamide calms and evens tone; cranberry, rosemary, and green tea provide antioxidant defense; blue algae and sea parsley help soothe.

SPF Moisturizer FAQ

What should I look for in an SPF Moisturizer?

Ideally, you want a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, paired with a texture that suits your skin type. Oily skin pairs well with lightweight or mattifying formulas, while drier skin benefits from hydrating ingredients like glycerin and hyaluronic acid. Sensitive skin responds best to fragrance-free formulas with barrier-supporting ingredients like ceramides and soothing niacinamide. And ultimately, consistency is key. The best SPF moisturizer should feel less like a chore and more a ritual you enjoy applying every summer morning.  Below, Dr. Ruth lends her expertise to answer some common questions about choosing and using an SPF moisturizer

Does a moisturizer with SPF provide the same level of protection as applying a dedicated sunscreen, or are there limitations folks should know about?

Dr. Ruth: “A moisturizer with SPF can provide meaningful sun protection, but the biggest limitation is that most people do not apply enough product to reach the labeled SPF on the bottle. Dedicated sunscreens are often formulated specifically for more even coverage, water resistance, and higher UV protection, whereas SPF moisturizers tend to work best for lower-exposure, everyday situations.”

How much does daily incidental sun exposure, like walking outside, commuting, sitting near windows, or quick errands, really contribute to premature aging and skin cancer risk over time?

Dr. Ruth: “Daily incidental sun exposure adds up much more than people realize. Walking the dog, commuting, sitting by windows, or running quick errands may seem minor, but over years this repeated UV exposure contributes significantly to collagen breakdown, pigmentation, wrinkles, and cumulative skin cancer risk, especially on the face, neck, and hands.”

What is the biggest mistake people make when using SPF moisturizers, especially when it comes to how much product they apply?

Dr. Ruth: “The biggest mistake people make with SPF moisturizers is underapplying and not reapplying throughout the day. Most men use just enough to feel moisturized, but not enough to achieve the advertised SPF level, so they end up getting far less protection than they think.”

In what situations is an SPF moisturizer enough on its own, and when should someone layer a separate sunscreen on top?

Dr. Ruth: “An SPF moisturizer is usually enough for short periods indoors, office days, or minimal outdoor exposure. If someone is spending extended time outside, exercising, sweating, driving for long periods, or near reflective surfaces like water or snow, I recommend layering or switching to a dedicated broad-spectrum sunscreen with consistent reapplication.”

Do moisturizers with SPF hydrate and nourish the skin as effectively as regular moisturizers, or does adding sun protection change the formula?

Dr. Ruth: “Many current SPF moisturizers hydrate very well and can perform similarly to traditional moisturizers, especially newer formulas designed with barrier support in mind. That said, adding UV filters can slightly change texture or feel, so some SPF products may feel lighter, less rich, or more matte depending on the formulation.”

What ingredients should men look for in a good moisturizer with SPF beyond just the SPF number itself, particularly when it comes to hydration and barrier support?

Dr. Ruth: “Beyond the SPF number itself, men should look for ingredients that support hydration and skin barrier health, like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, niacinamide, and squalane. Antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, or green tea can also help defend against environmental stress and oxidative damage from UV exposure and pollution.”

Do SPF moisturizers lose effectiveness throughout the day the same way regular sunscreen does, and should people still be reapplying them every couple of hours?

Dr. Ruth: “SPF moisturizers do lose effectiveness throughout the day, particularly with sweat, oil production, rubbing the face, or time spent outdoors. Even if you are using an SPF moisturizer, reapplication still matters, especially if you are outside for prolonged periods, because UV protection is not designed to last all day from a single morning application.”
