For the first time in the 25 years since Mariah Carey penned it, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” is sitting pretty at the top of the charts. As Billboard notes, the holiday classic is No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart dated Dec. 21.
The song is no stranger to the charts — it found its way into the Top 10 in 2017 and peaked at No. 3 last year — but this is the first time it has climbed all the way to No. 1. It’s also the second-ever holiday song to reach No. 1 and the first to top the chart in 61 years — after The Chipmunks’ “The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late),” which was No. 1 for four weeks in 1958-1959.
“All I Want For Christmas Is You” becomes Mariah Carey’s 19th No. 1, extending her record among solo artists and putting her just one behind the Beatles — who have 20 chart-toppers — for the overall record.
She also sets a new record for longest span of Hot 100 No. 1s at 29 years, four months and two weeks (her “Vision of Love” hit No. 1 on Aug. 4, 1990). Carey also joins a handful of artists to have No. 1 hits in the 1990s, the 2000s and the 2010s.
