Jordan Peele’s Us is already cleaning up at the box office. The critically-acclaimed film slammed into its debut weekend, pulling in $7.4 million in Thursday night previews.
Following Thursday night’s success, the film is on track to earn $27 million Friday at the North American box office, with an impressive $64 million in earnings projected for the weekend.
The film’s Thursday night numbers mark one of the most impressive showings for a horror film, and the predicted earnings for the weekend leave Us poised to unseat Captain Marvel from its No. 1 slot at the box office, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
If the film continues to perform as predicted, its weekend earnings are expected to mark the third-best opening for an R-rated horror film. Us will rank behind 2017’s It, which pulled in a whopping $123 million in its opening weekend, and last year’s Halloween, which holds the No. 2 spot at $76.2 million.
The film’s early success comes as no surprise following the massive popularity of Peele’s 2017 debut, Get Out. While Peele’s first feature sparked a cultural sensation, Us is already projected to outperform its predecessor at the box office.
Starring Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke, Us tells the story of a woman who returns to her childhood home with her family, where they encounter the uncanny in the form of their own doppelgängers.
