Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos announced the launch of the Bezos Earth Fund on Monday, stating that he would be committing $10 billion of his massive net worth to climate change relief efforts.
Bezos announced the move in an Instagram post, writing, “Climate change is the biggest threat to our planet. I want to work alongside others both to amplify known ways and to explore new ways of fighting the devastating impact of climate change on this planet we all share.” The multi-billionaire went on to explain that the initiative would seek to fund scientists, activists and NGOs in “any effort that offers a real possibility to help preserve and protect the natural world.”
Bezos added that he would be committing the initial $10 billion “to start” and plans to begin issuing grants by summer.
Amazon subsequently confirmed the announcement to the Verge, and a source reportedly told outlet that the Bezos Earth Fund “would not engage in private sector investment, but focus entirely on charitable giving.”
“We can save Earth. It’s going to take collective action from big companies, small companies, nation states, global organizations, and individuals,” Bezos wrote in the Instagram post. “Earth is the one thing we all have in common — let’s protect it, together.”
