The latest preview for the final chapter of the multi-super hero saga, Avengers: Endgame aired during the Super Bowl on Sunday, giving many fans something to cheer for in the midst of their 4-hour-long boredom.
But the excitement didn’t last long as the shadowy clip devolved quickly into a state of eerie desperation. As the panning shots of New York City soared over the Statue of Liberty, Marvel worshippers were reminded that half of the universe’s living beings were wiped out by Thanos — but Liberty Island, surrounded by boats, emerges as a kind of refuge, as Entertainment Weekly put it.
Yet the home of the New York Mets, Citi Field — much as in real life — was utterly empty.
There has clearly been a significant time jump between the last film and Endgame, EW reported.
“Some people move on,” Captain America, aka Steve Rogers, (Chris Evans) said, “But not us,” he added in a hollow voice.
But instead of dwelling on it, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) gets her emotions out on a shooting range. She and Cap will be joined by the surviving members of their team, like Thor — and his new Stormbreaker battle axe — Rocket Raccoon, Ant-Man, War Machine, Hulk, Hawkeye and Iron Man himself, Tony Stark, who is off welding in space.
The trailer leaves many questions open for debate and largely left devotees on the edges of their seats; at least for now. Avengers: Endgame launches April 26.
