Hawaii could be the first state to, effectively, ban smoking. A new law proposed would raise the minimum age to legally purchase cigarettes to 100 years old.
Under current law one must be 21 years old to purchase cigarettes. The proposition would see that age increase over the next four years to 100 years old by 202, Sky News reports.
Representative Richard Creagan, a doctor and democrat, proposed the bill as a means to do more to ban “the deadliest artefact in human history.”
“Basically, we essentially have a group who are heavily addicted, in my view, enslaved by a ridiculously bad industry- which has enslaved them by designing a cigarette that is highly addictive, knowing that it highly lethal. And, it is,” he told the Hawaii Tribune-Herald newspaper.
