Mike Dunphy

Mike Dunphy grew up in Burlington, Vermont and got the heck out the first chance he could. After studying at the University of Kent in Canterbury, England, he joined the Peace Corps and taught English for two years in a small village in Estonia. Playing the ESL card, he continued to travel and teach abroad, eventually landing in Istanbul, Turkey, where he got his first paid writing work for Time Out magazine. Falling as much in love with writing as travel, he returned to the United States and earned a master’s degree in publishing and writing at Emerson College in Boston before moving to New York City and pursuing the dream.  

Fast-forward 15 years, and the career continues. Mike has not only contributed articles publications like National Geographic, CNN, USA Today, Travel Weekly, Forbes, Fodor’s and, Huffington Post, he also has helped manage several, including multiple travel magazines and a Vermont newspaper. Mike’s editorial resume in the marketing world is just as robust, writing and editing content for companies and organizations like Samsung, Bose, Geico, Caesars Palace, and Humane World for Animals. Lastly, for 10 years, Mike has taught courses in creative nonfiction, travel writing, feature writing, essay and opinion, and self-editing for Gotham Writers Workshop in New York City.  

Based in Salem, Massachusetts, he covers travel, beer, technology, and animals for a variety of publications and brands, while teaching at Gotham.
