In unsurprising but still unprecedented news, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has officially become the longest-running live-action comedy series of all time after being renewed for a 15th season.
With season 15, the series — which premiered on FX in August 2005 and currently airs on FXX — will edge out The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet for the record. The show’s cast has been vocal about their desire to break the record in the past, with Charlie Day telling The Wrap ahead of the show’s 13th season that he’d like to keep going until at least season 15.
“You definitely get Season 13, which we’re making right now, and Season 14, which we’re contracted to do, and then beyond that, it’ll be up to FX,” Day said at the time. “But I think 15 is the record for a comedy, so I imagine we’ll all want to hold the record for the longest-running comedy in America. Fifteen would be the record for the longest live-action comedy, so we’ll probably try and break that record if we can.”
Don’t expect the gang to stop at 15, either. Back in January, as Deadline reported, creator and star Rob McElhenney told reporters at the TCA press tour that “we’re going to keep doing it forever if people keep watching.”
