Is 2022 shaping up to be a year of high-profile lawsuits involving the media? Last month, a judge dismissed Sarah Palin’s libel suit against The New York Times. This month’s suit comes from baseball player Trevor Bauer, and its target is the website Deadspin. Bauer took to Twitter earlier this week to announce that the suit had been filed.
According to Awful Announcing’s report on the lawsuit, Bauer is seeking an amount of money “in excess of $75,000.”
The full complaint goes into more detail. It argues that Deadspin “capitalized on a false accusation against Trevor Bauer by a woman (‘Complainant’) to continue an unrelenting attack on Mr. Bauer with the purpose of humiliating him and ruining his baseball career.”
At issue is an accusation of sexual assault directed at Bauer over the summer, which led a number of publications reporting on the accusation (InsideHook included) to update their articles as more details were made available.
Bauer’s lawsuit contends that Deadspin “pushed forward with the false narrative.” The suit goes on to cite an article by Deadspin’s managing editor, Chris Baud, titled “Trevor Bauer should never pitch again,” and refers to a number of other unflattering articles published on the site over the years. Baud and Deadspin owner G/O Media are both named in the lawsuit.
