After nearly 40 years talking about sports as a broadcaster on TV and radio, former ESPN personality Dan Patrick is partnering up with a couple of new teammates on a new venture: podcasting.

In conjunction with IMDb and Amazon Music, the 64-year-old has launched That Scene with Dan Patrick, a new original podcast that features Hollywood actors and filmmakers revealing what went on behind-the-scenes of some of the most iconic moments in movie and TV history.

“The conversational style of podcasting made for a natural transition from my daily sports show,” Patrick tells InsideHook. “I’ve always wanted it to feel like you’re having a conversation with someone in a bar. That style is very attainable within the podcast world.”

The show, which premiered on Tuesday with an episode featuring Adam Sandler going inside his onscreen fight with legendary game show host Bob Barker in Happy Gilmore (“The price is wrong, bitch!), will be released on a weekly basis exclusively on Amazon Music.

“We all have moments in life that take us back to a specific time or feeling in our lives,” Patrick says. “For some it’s a familiar smell, a taste, or a song. For me and so many, it’s a scene in a movie that made us laugh, made us cry, frightened us, inspired us, or simply provided escape. This podcast is about those moments, and I could not be more passionate about sharing them with you again — but this time it will be all about how those scenes happened, and sometimes how they almost never happened at all.”

So, why did Patrick want to have 54-year-old Sandler as his first guest?

“Adam and I have a great history, and he’s one of my favorite people to talk about movies with,” Patrick says. “So what better way to launch a podcast about movies and TV shows than by chatting with one of the iconic comedy stars on the planet?”

Following Sandler, other guests Patrick has lined up to appear on That Scene include Will Ferrell, David Spade, Bryan Cranston and Peter Billingsley, better known as Ralphie Parker from A Christmas Story. And, based on the concept behind That Scene, listeners should expect the guest list to feature names they love if they are familiar with popular culture.

“I’ve always loved the idea of those brain-worm cultural moments that stay with you,” Patrick says. “Whether it’s the streaking scene in Old School, or that last shot in Breaking Bad, those pieces that hang on are the ones I wanted to dissect.”

Though it is a slight departure from what he’s done in the past, Patrick is excited about the possibilities entering the podcasting world can offer.

“The entrepreneurial spirit of podcasts is one of the most exciting elements,” he says. “There’s so much room to give voices and platforms to people who may otherwise not have an opportunity.”
