A 1988 episode of BBC’s That’s Life is making Internet rounds after touching footage of a man and the hundreds of children he rescued from the Holocaust resurfaced online.

Sir Nicholas Winton quietly orchestrated the passage of 669 mostly Jewish children from Czechoslovakia to England on the eve of World War II in 1939, but told no one of his heroism for a half-century, the New York Times reports. Details only began to emerge in the public sphere after his wife Greta discovered a scrapbook in their attic containing the photos and names of the children who were saved from Nazi death camps.

With Winton’s permission, she went on to share the scrapbook with a Holocaust researcher, who reached out to the children on the list. The world learned of this incredible story after Winton was invited as a member of the audience at That’s Life. He didn’t realize that he was surrounded by the grown children he had helped rescue until the host asked if anyone in the room owed their life to Winton.
