The Book of Burns

By The Editors

Settle into your Le Corbusier lounger, gents: Mad Men returns for its seventh and final season this Sunday.

AMC’s fashionable soap (yes, it is a soap, just go with it) has received due accolades for its fidelity to period detail, and your correspondents at InsideHook have always been partial to one nuance above all:

The biting wit of the mid-century put-down.

Hence, we proudly present The Mad Men Book of Burns.

The Book of Burns is, quite simply, a visual recital of the characters’ verbal lashings.

Joan, putting Roger in his place. Roger, flicking his filigreed tongue. Don, being Don.

That each character is so well-spoken — hat doff to Herr Weiner, Mad Men‘s dictatorial wordsmith in grammatical jodhpurs — is a large part of the fun.

Not to mention the characters are a generation or two removed; it’s like listening to your normally uptight parents get drunk at a party downstairs while you’re drifting off to sleep.

So, enjoy Mad Men this Sunday.

And in the meantime, enjoy the Book of Burns.
