At a shareholder meeting earlier this week, Jeff Bezos refused to come on stage to address employees asking the company to take action on the climate crisis.
In a letter published last year, a group made up of more than 7,500 staffers called Amazon Employees for Climate Justice demanded that Bezos release the company’s plans to reduce carbon emissions and reliance on fossil fuels to the public.
“In our mission to become ‘Earth’s most customer-centric company,’ we believe our climate impact must be a top consideration in everything we do,” according to the letter. “We have the power to shift entire industries, inspire global action on climate, and lead on the issue of our lifetimes. We ask that you, as leaders responsible for our strategic direction, adopt the climate plan resolution and release a company-wide plan that incorporates the six principles above.”
About 50 members of the group were at the shareholder meeting and they put forward a proposal asking Amazon’s board of directors to release a public report on climate change from.
The proposal for a public report from the board of directors was not passed following a vote by shareholders.
After that happened, the group tried to confront Bezos, but Amazon’s CEO opted not to engage.
“Jeff remained off-stage, ignored the employees and would not speak to them,” the group said in a statement. “Jeff’s inaction and lack of meaningful response underscore his dismissal of the climate crisis and spoke volumes about how Amazon’s board continues to de-prioritize addressing Amazon’s role in the climate emergency.
