Life-size cutouts of Barbie and pink everything — flowers, balloons, couches, triple-decker cakes — were on display in Culiacán, the capital of Mexico’s northwestern Sinaloa state, where the wife of the biggest name in drug trafficking was throwing a birthday party for her 7-year-old twins.

According to The Washington Post, and first reported by The Los Angeles Times, Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of alleged Sinaloa Cartel boss Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, took to social media to post images from the 7th birthday party for the couple’s twin daughters.

But the images have drawn intense outrage. El Chapo, currently awaiting trial in the United States, is alleged to have run a violent billion-dollar narcotics empire that not only had nearly complete control of the American illegal drug supply but also left behind a significant body count. As Guzmán sits in a cell, his wife is hosting parties with the “blood money,” The Post writes.

“You know that this was not possible without who knows how many deaths and tortures in Mexico, right?” one poster commented in Spanish under Coronel’s party pictures.

However, this show of wealth must also be frustrating for U.S. officials to see, because even though the Justice Department has filed criminal forfeiture papers seeking to confiscate Guzmán’s reported $14 billion in assets, the government has not been unable to get any of the alleged drug lord’s ill-gotten gains.
