Bad for competition. Good for your wallet.

Starting Monday, Amazon’s Lowering Prices at Whole Foods

The hacky “Whole Foods? More like whole paycheck!” joke may be a thing of the past.

With Amazon’s $13 billion purchase of Whole Foods set to be complete on Monday, the online giant is slashing prices on some of the supermarket’s best-selling items. Included in that list: Organic apples, avocados, baby kale, large brown eggs, salmon and Whole Trade bananas.

More perks: Amazon Prime members should see future discounts if they shop at the grocery chain. Whole Foods private-label foods and products will be sold through Amazon. And Amazon Lockers will be set up in more WF stores, possibly paving the way for those new two-minute deliveries.

“This is just the beginning,” said Jeff Wilke, CEO of Amazon Worldwide Consumer, in a statement. “We will make Amazon Prime the customer rewards program at Whole Foods Market and continuously lower prices as we invent together.”

Losers? Your local grocery store, for starters. And other chains not backed by Jeff Bezos: Shares of Kroger and Walmart fell on Amazon’s recent news. (Walmart, however, did recently set up a deal with Google Express — hooray, competition?)
