Over the course of his long career as a filmmaker, Sydney Pollack was nominated for several prestigious awards, including three Oscar nominations (and one win) for Best Director. Had he not been a talented director, he could likely have had a thriving career as a character actor, if his work in supporting roles in Eyes Wide Shut and Michael Clayton was any indication.
And, as it turns out, he also had an excellent eye for cars.
Now, a 1971 Ferrari 365 GTS that Pollack owned is headed to auction via RM Sotheby’s. And while that combination of vehicle and history might sound enticing on its own, there’s a great deal more that’s compelling about this particular Ferrari. It’s one of 121 1971 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spiders by Scaglietti — specifically, the 31st to be made. And it’s one of only 14 with an Argento Metallizzato finish.
Pollack was the second person to own this particular Ferrari, before selling it to Mexico City resident Alberto Amezcua in 1979. Over the course of the next two decades, the Ferrari was embroiled in a legal battle after Amezcua was, reportedly, forced to sell it, and took legal action years later to regain it. The Ferrari has gone through two restorations since the late 1990s, and has just over 40,000 miles on its odometer.
Currently, the sale price is estimated to be between $2.4 and $2.8 million. The auction will take place on January 27.
