No Shave November?

More like No Shave … ever

A study out of the Journal of Evolutionary Biology just published some conclusions on how men with a heavy dosage of scruff are perceived by their female counterparts. And the findings are pretty conclusive — you’re gonna want to cancel that Dollar Shave Club subscription, ASAP.

The study surveyed 8,500 women, asking them to choose between various male faces and rate each based on likelihood of a “short-term liasion” or a “long-term relationship.” The male faces were presented as clean-shaven, lightly stubbled, heavily stubbled or touting full-grown beards. And across the board, in a dominating sweep, women preferred men with beards.

The exact breakdown? Heavily stubbled won,  followed by a full beard (neck beards included, we’re assuming) and light stubble. Clean-shaven, while still cornering the market on job interviews, finished dead last for attracting a mate.

The Journal of Evolutionary Biology suggests “beardedness may be attractive when judging long‐term relationships as a signal of intrasexual formidability and the potential to provide direct benefits to females.” Basically: beards signal dependability and satisfaction. Get growing, fellas.
