Even as thousands transition back to the gym after a year of online workouts, many are ditching public exercise spaces in favor of home gyms.

Outfitted with the right equipment, your basement sweatshop (or whatever name you bestow upon your workout space) can be a capable alternative to a pricey gym membership. It doesn’t need bulky, expensive equipment or talking mirrors, either. These days, we’re using Smrtft’s Nüobell 80-pound adjustable dumbbell set to successfully WFH (workout from home).

The Nüobell set should win an award for best-looking adjustable dumbbells, if such an award exists. Its machined steel weight plates are sleek and streamlined, almost as if Ikea was tasked with creating workout equipment. The design also makes the weights less bulky because plates are completely flush with one another, which makes for smoother motions and better performance. Gone is the constant rattle of plastic and metal we’ve come to expect from adjustable systems over the years. It also comes in tactical green and, for an extra $20, white.

To adjust the weights, you simply spin the knurled handle until you hear a discernible click while a small display indicates the current load. Unlike most adjustable dumbbell sets with weight limits set at 55 pounds, the Nüobell runs from 5 to 80 pounds, though a smaller Nüobell model adjusts up to 50 pounds for those requiring less weight. The set endures everything from biceps curls to weighted push-ups, but we recommend using these on a soft surface to avoid unwanted abrasion. Between workouts, plastic cradles store the weights for easy access.

Adjustable dumbbells may pale in comparison to modern at-home workout equipment, but they remain a staple of every sensible gym. The concept of owning a full set was once realistic only for bodybuilders and diehard fitness gurus, but clever mechanisms made all-in-one dumbbells widely accessible. Though every major fitness brand now offers some version of this equipment, shortfalls are common. The Nüobell, on the other hand, gets it right.

Pick these up to round out your home gym for the sake of substance and style.
