Comedian Dave Chappelle thinks he should get more credit for helping establishing the foundation upon which Key & Peele, the hit Comedy Central sketch show, built its success.
When asked about Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele’s during an interview with Gayle King for CBS This Morning, Chappelle gave a surprising response.
“I’m a fan of their show,” Chappelle answered. “When I did Chappelle’s Show, there were certain conventions of the show that the network resisted. I fought the network very hard so that those conventions could come to fruition.”
One of the conventions he’s referring to is the length of sketches. Chappelle name-checks his 10 minute-long “Black White Supremacist” as one that network executives tried to shorten to five minutes.
“[Network executives said] ‘Well, that’s 10 minutes long. It should be five minutes long.’ Why should it be five minutes long?” he said during an interview promoting his new Netflix special. “These types of conventions … I fought very hard.
“When I watch Key & Peele, and I see they’re doing a format that I created, and at the end of the show it says ‘Created by Key & Peele’ — that hurts my feelings.”
