YOUR GOOD GUY TO KNOW
Jeremy Lake, Bar Owner/Cocktail Virtuoso
Those looking for a quality dram in an even more quality environment would do well to seek out Lake, who can usually be found behind the pine at delightfully dim drinking den Lost Property Bar in Hollywood — an establishment so named for the assorted bric-a-brac that adorns the space, all claimable by enterprising patrons. Artfully balanced craft cocktails, a killer whiskey list, a friendly crew and live music on Sundays — anyone asking for more in a bar is just being unreasonable.
And as for those trousers, ‘tis the season to show a little ankle. Or hell, a lot of ankle: the current crop of, er, cropped cuts are meant to play a little highwater-y. So lean into it. Dress ‘em up, dress ‘em down. Mix it up. You’ll be surprised how much punch they add, even in a solid color like black.
IF YOU’RE NOT AT YOUR OWN BAR, YOU’RE DRINKING AT…
“
On the rare occasion that I’m out, I typically like to stay low key. I’ll grab a shot and a beer at Little Toni’s pizza in North Hollywood because … pizza. You’d never expect such a beautiful little bar to be tucked away in the back of this old North Hollywood staple.

DATE SPOT GUARANTEED TO IMPRESS?
“
My wife and I recently celebrated Valentine’s Day at 71 Above at the top of the US Bank building downtown. I was impressed with the entire experience: view is like no other in the city, the food is made by Chef Vartan Abgaryan, and the cocktails by Darwin Manahan. Service was great. Top notch and very romantic all around.

TIPS ON GETTING IN GOOD WITH YOUR LOCAL BARTENDER?
“
Being aware of your environment. At a mellow craft cocktail bar, ask the bartender if they’d be willing to take time to curate a custom drink based on your preferred flavors and spirits — they’ll likely enjoy your sense of adventure. In a busy sports bar or dive, help the bartender out and keep your order simple. Last, tip according to the effort they put into their work. That’ll go a long way in building a rapport.
