Not even Loyola-Chicago’s 98-year-old chaplain, Sister Jean Dolores-Schmidt, believed the team had a prayer of storming into the Final Four when the NCAA Men’s College Basketball Tournament started. But the No. 11 seeded Ramblers continued their miracle run on Saturday, upsetting No. 9 seed Kansas State in a dominant 78–62 win.
That proved a change of pace to the first three Loyola-Chicago victories in the tournament, in which the team beat heavily-favored Miami, Tennessee and Nevada by a total of four points over those three games. But then again, this is a March Madness particularly prone to madness, especially in the South where UMBC became the first No. 16 seed to ever beat a No. 1 seed when it upended title contender Virginia.
Loyola, the first No. 11 seed to reach the Final Four since VCU did it in 2011, faces No. 3 seed Michigan in the Final Four next Saturday.
