During a warmup round for The Masters at August National on Tuesday, Jon Rahm skipped his ball across the surface of the water at the 16th hole en route to a hole-in-one.
The Spaniard — who was celebrating his 26th birthday — three-hopped the pond before kicking the ball up onto the green, where it eventually curved around the edge of the green and sank into the hole.
No. 16 is famous for its propensity for aces, yielding 18 over the history of the tournament, including three in 2016 alone. The hole’s traditional day-four placement tends to funnel anything that reaches the back section of the green back toward the hole, as was the case with Tiger Woods’s iconic chip-in in 2005.
Incredibly, Rahm also drained an ace on the fourth hole during practice on Monday.
When The Masters begin on Thursday, Rahm will tee off in a trio with tournament favorite Bryson DeChambeau of the U.S. and Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa.
Rahm is trying to become the fourth Spanish golfer to earn a green jacket after Seve Ballesteros, Jose Maria Olazabal and Sergio Garcia.
“It would mean a lot,” he said this week. “Needless to say, it’s a special event for everybody who comes and competes at the Masters, and I would say there’s such Spanish history of champions here, with three great champions and three idols of mine, that I would love to be able to add my name to that list.”
