This is Be. It’s a toothbrush. It’s kind of like your electric toothbrush, but it’s completely analogue. It works by twisting the base to wind it up like a top, which is so simple it begs the question: “why didn’t I think of that!”

Be is currently at the beginning of its funding cycle on Kickstarter and has amassed $210,313, well above its goal of $30,000.

The environmental case for Be is strong. We live in a world bombarded with electrical devices, which not only burn natural resources via electricity and production, they also require batteries. According to Be’s research, of the 15 billion batteries discarded each year, only 1% are recycled … that means most of the rest go into the landfill where they contaminate soil and water.

However, electric toothbrushes are supposed to be better than manual ones for keeping your teeth clean. This is because most people bore easily or brush in haste and don’t brush their teeth and gums long enough to get them thoroughly cleaned. An electric toothbrush, on the other hand, goes farther faster, and on a handy timer so you do not have to guess.

Be does that and with biodegradable heads, something the Phillips and Oral B’s haven’t quite figured out yet.

At $49, it’s also quite a steal, and comes with three replacement heads, which you should replace every six to eight weeks.

Clean planet. Clean mouth. That’s something to smile about.
