Due to the ongoing fears of air travel during the COVID-19 pandemic, stuck-at-home passengers are left with fake VR flights and economy class flight simulators.
Nuts to that. Literally: The Texas-based GNS Foods, a food supplier to United Airlines, is now taking their mini bags of specialty nuts directly to consumers.
As a press release from supplier GNS Foods notes:
When COVID-19 hit, the airline removed the nuts from all of its flights, saying that it was reducing contact between passengers and its flight staff. As a result, GNS Foods has an excess of the nuts, more than 30,000 pounds.
The mixes are being sold at near-cost prices in the GNS retail store and online here. The 30,000 pounds (!) of available nuts include Elite Status Nut Mix (a blend of whole cashews and whole almonds) and Elite Status Hawaii Mix (whole cashews, whole almonds and large whole macadamia nuts), which were served on flights to Hawaii. They are both packed in two-pound bags and shipped via FedEx.
As the travel site One Mile at a Time points out, shipping is quite expensive even if the nuts themselves are reasonably priced. But if you’re game, other airlines and suppliers are selling off their excess inventory too; witness nuts for American Airlines, British Airways gin and Qantas pajamas.
