New Tiny House Takes Three Hours to Assemble

By Diane Rommel

When does a tiny house stop being a house and become something else?

A shack? With a metal roof and no foundation?

A tent with walls?

Pin-Up Houses tests that model with a new prototype, the tri-color “France,” which requires just three hours of set-up time and provides a scant 74 square feet of living space. The tripartite theme is continued within the structure as well, with each color coded to a different activity: The red area houses a basic kitchen, while the blue space is for sleeping. The middle, white section is intended as a living room of sorts.

The price tag, at least, is in line with those specs: It costs just $2,100 to build.

This very tiny house wasn’t intended to entice downsizing hipsters: Rather, it was developed as part of an effort to create space that would offer fast shelter on a small budget.

If your taste runs to miniaturized versions of your basic suburban luxury digs, it’s definitely not for you. The house appears to contain a wood-burning stove, but there’s not a lot of information about the kitchen — if, on the other hand, you’re escaping a natural or manmade disaster, we’re thinking it would make for a very welcome home, indeed.
