Jay Leno, known Tesla fanboy, recently had Elon Musk on his show Jay Leno’s Garage — again. As with most things concerning the electric vehicle company, other Musk-eteers snooped around and offered a sneak peek back in January, but now we finally have it: a test drive of the pickup of the future known as the Cybertruck.
The episode aired on CNBC on Wednesday, May 27, but the full segment with Musk and Leno tooling around Los Angeles, and under Los Angeles, is available now on YouTube:
While there have been other videos of the Cybertruck in action, including from the semi-disastrous release back in November, this is a more comprehensive look both inside and out on a highly anticipated electric truck that has divided automotive enthusiasts.
However, the most significant revelation is the fact that Tesla is deadly serious about the Cybertruck. It will be hitting the market sometime in late 2021 and, according to Musk, pretty much nothing will be changed from the model shown on the episode. When Leno asked what he would change for the production vehicle, Musk said he wants to shrink the proportions by 5 percent to help the truck fit in most garages, but after the episode was released he retracted that statement.
What does Tesla expect potential owners to do with a full-size Cybertruck? While inspecting the truck bed with Tesla Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen, Musk said, “If you want to mount like a missile launcher or something, you can do that.” As for the stainless steel body that will supposedly be able to withstand bullets from a handgun, Musk remarked, “We want to be a leader in apocalypse technology,” and then laughed.
While there hasn’t been any vehicle nearly as polarizing in recent years, Leno seems to come out the other side of The Boring Company underground tunnel (oh yeah, they drive the Cybertruck through that, too) confident in its prospects. If you agree, it’s available for pre-order now.
