A little less than two weeks before the documentary Happy Happy Joy Joy: The Ren & Stimpy Story is slated to drop, Comedy Central has announced its plans to reboot the beloved ’90s cartoon — making it the latest animated series from the era to enjoy new life on the network after it announced new seasons of Beavis & Butt-Head and a Daria spinoff called Jodie.
“We are excited to reinvent this iconic franchise with a new creative team and our partners at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio,” Chris McCarthy, president of ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group, said in a statement. “Ren & Stimpy joins our rapidly expanding roster of adult animation including South Park, Beavis and Butt-Head and Clone High as we continue to reimagine our treasure chest of beloved IP for new generations.”
Nearly 30 years after the original Ren & Stimpy premiered on Nickelodeon in 1991 along with Doug and Rugrats, the Hollywood Reporter writes that the Comedy Central reboot will be “reimagined for a new generation.”
There’s no word yet on writers attached to the project, how many episodes the network has ordered or when fans of the cult classic cartoon can expect the new version to premiere.
