To stop a disaster, sometimes you have to cause one. Controlled burns by the forestry service forestall wildfires; avalanche mitigation prevents a cascading catastrophe at most major ski resorts.  And with 95 inches, Telluride recently had its largest snowfall in 40 years, which was why the mountain decided to do a preventative blast. Routine stuff in a ski town, really. What’s unusual is that at Telluride, you can see it the blasts from Colorado Avenue, aka Main Street. The small crowd that witnessed it cheered like a bunch of soccer hooligans. Enjoy.
