Photographer’s ‘Abandoned Britain’ Project Documents Empty Buildings

In his ongoing project, “Abandoned Britain,” photographer Simon Yeung showcases the unexpected allure of England’s derelict buildings.

“Photographing abandoned places is my passion and in all honesty has become an obsession,” he told Photogrist, adding “I do a lot of traveling to go to these places.”

Through his photos, which are available on his Instagram page, a bittersweet narrative emerges; many of these buildings can still be saved or repurposed, but many of the communities they’re in don’t have the money to renovate them. Thus, they slowly rot away in place, their decay surprisingly photogenic.

Yeung doesn’t specify where his photographs are taken; but at a glance, many of them are abandoned train stations, hotels, churches, mansions, and in one especially gloomy photo, a morgue.
