He may have lived in a Yellow Submarine.
But John Lennon drove around in an almost comically mid-century British limousine.
And soon, you’ll be able to play the role of chauffeur.
On September 7th, the late Beatle’s 1956 Austin Princess limousine is going up for auction at RM Sotheby’s event at Battersea Park, and of the $330,000 it’s expected to fetch, a portion will be donated to UNICEF, the global children’s charity that the Fab Four supported throughout their lives and careers.
The Beatles actually kept a fleet of the Austin Princesses at their Apple Records HQ in London, but this particular one was featured in the made-for-TV Imagine movie that aired in Britain in 1973. Accordingly, this one’s got some special Lennon-issue mods — like airliner seats in the back — and it comes with the original registration document purchased and signed by Lennon on August 26, 1971.
Fun fact: The Beatles loved this style of limousine because the rear door opened in a way that made escaping throngs of screaming teens no prob-limo.
