An amateur photographer has brought some new life into Italy’s abandoned castles and churches.

Roman Robroek, 30, has spent four years on a labor of love, traveling the Mediterranean country from his home in the Netherlands in search of inspiration.

“In these photos I’ve tried to capture the beauty and the architecture of abandoned places in Italy,” Robroek told Caters News.

“Places like these can be very old carrying lots of history with them, and often a lot of craftsmanship was involved into constructing or decorating the building.”

He added that he wanted to bring attention to under-appreciated places that had been left to rot.
