How You’d Be Saved by a Backcountry Search-and-Rescue Team

Every year, thousands of missing persons cases are investigated by search-and-rescue (SAR) teams in the U.S. Despite each operation having its own set of unique issues, most follow a similar protocol. To understand exactly how each search works, Outside magazine interviewed experts Paul Anderson, a retired 42-year veteran of the National Park Service, who spent 11 years as superintendent of Denali National Park; and Dave Prouty, the president of the Mt.
