You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.
Unless that dog is a seasoned Disney animator. And the new trick involves a virtual-reality headset, a stylus and room to roam.
Such is the takeaway of “Step Into the Page,” a short documentary in which Glen Keane — son of legendary cartoonist Bil Keane (Family Circus) and creator of some of Disney’s most iconic characters (Aladdin, Ariel, Pocahontas, the Beast) — gets properly acquainted with a new medium: 3D drawing.
“What is this amazing new world I just stepped into?” Keane exclaims as he giddily gesticulates about an empty room, dashing off sketches of Ariel and the Beast in three dimensions for the first time.
The video is a preview of a lecture Keane will deliver at Future of Storytelling, a summit in New York October 7-8th bringing together writers, artists, media moguls and more to discuss the “the most vital ideas, people, and technologies that are shaping the way we tell stories.”
