Given his playboy predilections, it should be no surprise that James Bond was also a serious gourmand. The proof is in the Ian Fleming-penned pudding: over the course of 12 novels, the man waxed a lot of lyric on Bond’s love for food, often in harrowing detail. But in 50 years of Bond cinema, that love has never fully translated to the big screen.
Enter photographer Henry Hargreaves’ latest project, Dying To Eat, a photo series that meticulously recreates some of Bond’s most lavish meals.
Hargreaves’ words:
“To a 1950s post-war audience, Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels were an escape. For the war-weary man, Bond’s adventures represented the ultimate fantasy down to the finest detail — including food, a facet largely absent from the nearly two dozen 007 films … by presenting an authentic picture of what was considered exotic or gourmet at the time, the images reveal much about the cultural climate of the day, as they do about the food.”
