Just because it’s open water doesn’t mean it’s open borders.

That was the lesson learned by a group of festive rafters who took part in the annual Port Huron Float down Michigan’s St. Clair River this weekend. The river flows north to Ontario, Canada, and when the winds shifted, it became difficult for the rafters to get back to port, causing them to drift all the way to Sarnia, Canada.

And it wasn’t few of them. It was 1,500 people who required 20 bus trips to get home, reported the Blackburn News.

As Jeanne Gardner told the paper: “I’ve done this since I was in my 20s and I’m in my 50s now and never been in Canada illegally, ever,” says Gardner. “I have almost ended up in Canada a few times but I’ve always managed to get back, just not today.”

Nevertheless, it does happen nearly every year.

Not cool, Midwesterners. It’s only a matter of time before Canada goes on strike
