When you hear the name of Foxconn, your mind will probably go one of the many personal electronic devices that the company manufactures. They’ve been involved in the making of countless smartphones — including multiple generations of the iPhone — as well as Kindles and assorted video game consoles. But for their next venture into manufacturing, they’re thinking a little bit bigger. (Literally.)
As Car and Driver reports, Foxconn is teaming up with EV startup INDIEV to build prototypes for the INDI One electric vehicle, a hatchback capable of seating five. Earlier this year, Foxconn finalized a deal to purchase an Ohio plant previously owned by Lordstown Motors. According to Foxconn’s own announcement of the deal, the Lordstown facility will be used to assemble the INDI One prototypes — and leaves the door for more production to follow.
Foxconn’s announcement suggests that there may be more deals like this to come. The company’s Chief Product Officer, Jerry Hsiao, addressed the company’s plans in a statement, calling the INDIEV partnership “the beginning of many more discussions to come regarding the future of EV manufacturing in Ohio.”
Late last month, INDIEV announced a goal of becoming a publicly traded company. Development of the INDI One has been in the works for the last five years, and more details regarding the hatchback arrived last year.
