A Skyscaper-Sized Cave Just Opened and the Waitlist Is Already Out of Control

Oh, the world is a busy place. And our most staggering natural attractions exist in danger of being overrun.

This is perhaps why the Vietnamese government has taken such strong steps to safeguard the pristine environment of the newly opened Hang Son Doong caves: there’s now a two-year wait to access to spectacular underground network of caverns.

Just one tour outfitter may lead tours through the complex — which, as Travel + Leisure points out, is so mammoth that it can fit an Airbus A380 wing-to-wing — or a “New York skyscraper,” thanks to its 600-foot ceiling. Oxalis Adventure Tour’s cave offering only lasted 20 hours online before selling out; now interested cave visitors will need to wait until next year for another crack at the $3,000, six-night trip.

In the meantime, go ahead and practice on some good old American caves, especially given that this week is the centennial of the National Park Service.
