The New York Yankees’ top prospect suffered a major setback to his ascent through the minor leagues after tearing the UCL in his left elbow, the team announced.

Shortstop Gleyber Torres will need season-ending Tommy John surgery, which will keep the budding star out of action until spring training next year.

The 20-year-old infielder, who was playing for Triple-A Scranton, had consulted with Yankees’ team physician Christopher Ahmad Monday morning after being put on the 7-day DL with what was believed to be a hyperextended elbow.

Fortunately for the Yankees, the injured elbow isn’t on Torres’ throwing arm.

Torres was acquired as the centerpiece of a blockbuster trade with the Chicago Cubs for Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman last summer.
