Disgraced former NFL star O.J. Simpson was released from prison Sunday morning after serving nine years of a 33-year sentence over an attempted armed robbery in a Las Vegas hotel room, the Associated Press reported.
Even with the 70-year-old Simpson’s newfound freedom, however, the four-time NFL rushing leader won’t be able to outrun the stigma attached to his name. Simpson avoided conviction for the murders of ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, Ronald Goldman, after the so-called “Trial of the Century” in 1995. He was, though, found liable for the killings in a civil lawsuit for which he still owes $33 million.
Granted parole, Simpson exited Nevada’s Lovelock Correctional Center at 12:08 PT, according to a state prisons spokeswoman, and has kept his next moves under wraps from the public, though it was previously reported that he filed for a return to Florida.
Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, however, has said the state doesn’t want him. “Floridians are well aware of Mr. Simpson’s background, his wanton disregard for the lives of others, and of his scofflaw attitude with respect to the heinous acts for which he has been found civilly liable,” she said in a statement.
Simpson was ultimately convicted of a 2007 attempted armed heist of sports memorabilia in a Vegas hotel room that was caught on tape.
