Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker recently announced he would not seek re-election next year. That leaves an opening for retired NFL quarterback Peyton Manning to campaign for the seat.
Manning, who played for the Denver Broncos and the Indianapolis Colts, was a star for the University of Tennessee Volunteers and has a huge fanbase in the state.
Republican Rep. Scott DesJarlais, whose district includes middle and eastern Tennessee, told Business Insider that “[Manning] is a great guy and a popular guy” and “may be looking more at” running if the state’s other U.S. senator, Lamar Alexander, chooses to retire in 2020 when he is up for re-election.
In March, Manning had been rumored to be interested in Alexander’s senate seat. “Everybody likes Peyton Manning, including me,” Alexander said at the time.
Meanwhile, Manning told the Denver Post that he had “no interest in the political world, but would like to continue serving communities.”
