SF’s 5 Best Donut Shops. Because Donut Race.

Maybe you’re the kind of guy who likes to start off his Saturday morning with a Double Dipsea

This might not be for you.

If, however, you like your athletic events A) brief and B) with donut stations, we’ve got a race to put on your bucket list.

It’s called the Lard Butt. Full name: Lard Butt 1K. That’s not a typo: It’s a 1K.

It’s a race — let’s call it a stroll — around Lake Merced Park. Every 250 meters, you’ll find a refreshment station. No gels. No electrolytes.

Just donuts.

If you can think of a better way to spend the morning of November 4th: A) we doubt it and B) go for it.

Sign up here. Or? Maybe just enjoy some tasty donuts — you’ll find our picks for the best shops in town below.

Bob’s Donuts
As classic as it gets: Stop by this 24-hour joint at 2 a.m. for a chocolate frosted with rainbow sprinkles.

Mr. Holmes Bakehouse
The best fillings in town. Come by on Sunday for the donut with lemon curd jam.

Pepples
A superior vegan donut experience, the Oakland shop lives on after the Ferry Building spot has closed. Try the award-winning blueberry.

Happy Donuts (no website)
They’re not breaking the mold here — but our neighborhood shop (3801 24th Street) is our top choice for a glazed.

Trish’s Mini Donuts
These melt-in-your-mouth mini doughnuts are served hot — and possibly the only thing that can get us out to Pier 39.
