Fall Metal Jacket

By The Editors

What the well-dressed man in SF will be wearing this season. This is your Essential Fall Style Guide, Part One: in which we recommend The Jacket.

The M-65 jacket has a Travis Bickle problem.

Created for ‘Nam grunts by Alpha Industries (which still sells an original version today), the M-65 later graced the counter-cultural (read: grungy) shoulders of De Niro in Taxi Driver and Pacino in Serpico.

But recently, the military jacket’s been fancified.

It’s now olive without the drab, cut slim and equipped with elegant contrasts and sharp vents.

Here are our favorites this season, some inspired by the M-65 more closely than others.

AllSaints Yakushi M65

This coated cotton take on the classic Vietnam issue stands out from the ranks with contrasted sleeves and woolen elbow details. Buy online.

Burberry Military Quilt

This honeycomb quilted jacket is fresh from the future with waterproof flannel, brushed-to-buttery softness, an asymmetrical back-vent, and café racer sleeving. Buy online.

Drumohr Check Military

Stand out with some dazzle camouflage and Italian flair. Less technical than the majority of the field — Drumohr’d been in the game for two centuries before the M-65 was introduced, so variation is to be expected. Buy online.

Scotch & Soda Military

S&S’s take on tradition is as comfortable as it is attention-grabbing. Rocking knitted sleeves and a classic, weathered core, this is your go-to weekender. Throw it over a T-shirt and jeans and you’re ready for anything. Buy online.
