Christie’s Offering Two-Gallon Jug of Pre-Prohibition Whiskey at Auction

By Will Levith

For Kentucky whiskey lovers, Christie’s has a unique item up for auction in its online-only “All American Sale.” The lot includes a two-gallon jug of Plankinton Reserve from the Cedar Brook Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, distilled in the Spring of 1903 and bottled in 1915, along with its original wooden case. The straw-lined wooden presentation case includes a stamp confirming that it was inventoried “Under Act of Congress Oct. 3, 1917″—i.e. three years prior to Prohibition. The whiskey was distilled especially for Milwaukee’s Plankinton House Hotel, opened by meatpacking tycoon John Plankinton. The auction ends on July 12. Click here to place a bid.
