In 2014, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, the head of the Mexico’s vicious Sinaloa drug cartel, was arrested by Mexican authorities. By July of the following year, Guzmán had escaped in stunning fashion: bribing prison guards and fleeing through a nearly one-mile-long underground tunnel. While on the run, Guzmán contacted the Mexican actress Kate del Castillo, who had encouraged “El Chapo” over Twitter to use his power for good. This set forth a series of communications that culminated in an interview with the drug lord, alongside American actor Sean Penn, in the fall of 2015. It was that interview that gave authorities insight into Guzmán’s whereabouts and got him captured again in January 2016. Penn published his side of the story in Rolling Stone, but Kate del Castillo, who filmed parts of the interview, didn’t share much about her part until she sat down with The New Yorker’s Robert Draper. Read her tell-all here. Watch some clips from Del Castillo’s interview with “El Chapo” below.
